LINCOLNTON - Mrs. Peggy Abernathy Eaker, 75, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010 surrounded by her family. She was born March 14, 1935 in Lincoln County to the late Flossie Cashion Abernathy and the late Adolphus Pinkney Abernathy.

Her funeral service will be 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Boger City United Methodist Church with Rev. Allan Van Meter and Rev Joe Ervin officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 pm on Saturday prior to the service at the church.

Peggy is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Billy Joe Eaker. She is also predeceased by brothers James, Bob, Gordon and Jack Abernathy and sisters, Edith Abernathy and Evelyn MacNaughton. Surviving are her sons, Christopher Joe Eaker (Marcy) of Charlotte and Charles Darren Eaker of Huntersville; three grandchildren, Zach and Alec Eaker of Charlotte and Abigail Eaker of Huntersville. Also surviving are brothers, Dewey Abernathy of Lincolnton and Ray Abernathy of Catawba, NC; many dear nieces, nephews, extended family and loved ones who have cared for and supported her continuously over the years.

Peggy retired from Textile Piece Dye and was a member of Boger City United Methodist Church. Her many friends are a true testament to her mild mannered personality and easy going nature. She was a true joy to be around.

LINCOLNTON - Mr. Gerald Glenn Thorpe, Sr., age 74 of 3327 Hoffman Acres Street in Lincolnton, died on Monday, September 6, 2010.

His funeral service will be 11:00 am on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at First Baptist Church of High Shoals with Rev. Dickie Whitener and Rev. Charles Ingle officiating. Burial will follow in the Long Creek Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mr. Thorpe was born September 19, 1935 in Gaston County to the late Lewis and Lena Lineberger Thorpe. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Pruitt and Flora Bolick. Mr. Thorpe worked for First Union National Bank and for the Lincoln County Sherriff’s Department. He also served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Evans Thorpe of the home; a son, Gerald Glenn Thorpe, Jr. of Gastonia; one daughter, Debbie Lynn Thorpe of Lake Tillery; two step-daughters, Neresa Leonhardt and husband Russell of Cherryville, and Debbie Porter of Matthews; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Heafner was born February 10, 1951 in Lincoln County to the late Jack Roosevelt and Betty Morrison Heafner. He worked in shipping and receiving for Bohannan Technologies.

He is survived by his wife, Reda Masten Heafner of the home; stepsons, Bruce Jester, Alan Jester, and C.J. Deputy; two brothers, Tim Morris Heafner of Lincolnton and Mickey Heafner of Knoxville, TN; and seven grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Bruce, Tyler, Zachary, Alexis and Makayla; and niece, Freda Heafner.

Mrs. Bush was born November 1, 1935 in Brewton, Alabama to the late Andrew and Vergie Barnette Gibson. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Rhonda Dellinger and Karen Lovelace. Mrs. Bush was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, George A. Bush of the home; a son, Wayne Marler of Cherryville; six daughters, Dorothy Burton of Hildebran, Virginia Shell of Elizabethton, TN, Debbie Leatherman of Vale, Melinda Callahan of Hickory, Jill White of Tamassee, SC, and Terrie Cline of Hickory; two brothers, Walter Gibson of Florida and Johnny Gibson of Vale; four sisters, Barbara Hanson of Portland, OR, Mary Weathers of Claremont, Hazel Wallace of Newton, and Linda Bowman of Conover, sixteen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

VALE, NC - Edith Corene Wise Cook, 80, of 2664 Peeler Rd, Vale, passed away Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Cardinal Care in Lincolnton.

She was born in Lincoln County on June 13, 1930 to the late Lester Jacob Wise and Lillie Maebell Young Wise. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, Casar. Edith was a homemaker and ran a nursery, Humpty Dumpty, for many years as well as working at T& H in Hickory.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a daughter Vickie Sue Cook Halloway and a brother, Ralph Wise.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years D.C. Cook; two brothers, Clarence Wise of Hickory and Odell Wise of Vale; and two sisters Vergie Hoyle of Vale and Ellen Kiser of Stanley.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 PM Tuesday at Stamey Funeral Home. Condolences may be made online at www.stameyfuneralhome.com. At other times the family will be at the home of Vergie Hoyle, 2938 Peeler Rd, Vale, NC 28168.

A memorial service will be held 3:00pm on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in Lincolnton with Rev. Michael Gehring officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00pm on Monday at Warlick Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place at 3:00pm on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Sunset Memorial Park in Bennettsville, SC. At all other times, the family will be at the home of his daughter Pati Cooper, 2284 Heavner Road, Lincolnton, NC.

Mr. Townsend was born April 5, 1930 in Marlboro County, SC to the late Charles Evans and Ethel Moore Townsend. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, John Abner Townsend, Jr., and two daughters, Sandra Gail Townsend and Kimberly Lee Townsend, and two grandchildren, Kelley and Kippen Huitt. Mr. Townsend was a veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Heafner Tire after more than 20 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Camilla Galloway Townsend of the home, two daughters, Pati Cooper and husband Michael of Lincolnton and Cari Rhodes and husband Jeff of Fletcher; one brother, Rev. David Kenneth Townsend and wife Anne of Cheraw, SC; 7 grandchildren, Beri, Braden and Jay Huitt, Evan and Ashley Rhodes and Kelly and Camilla Arnold.

Born July 21, 1936 in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Grady Sailer and the late Ethel Abernathy Sailer.

Mr. Elmore was born September 21, 1940 in Lincoln County. He was the son of the late Claude Elmore and Macie Harrelson Elmore. Mr. Elmore was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Holt. He was the manager of the auto body repair shop at Town Square Ford until its closing. Mr. Elmore was a member of the Lincoln Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Berryhill is survived by four brothers, William “Bill” Berryhill of Lincolnton, Frank Berryhill, Sr., of Vale, James Berryhill of Vale, Jerry Berryhill, Lincolnton; two sisters, Betty B. Smith of Lincolnton, Dora Moose of Maiden, and a number of nieces and nephews.

VALE - Mrs. Barbara B. Beam, age 79 of 727 Hwy. 274 Vale, died on Wednesday, August 25, 2010.

Her funeral service will be 2:00 p. m. on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Cedar Grove with Pastor Dale Pederson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Mrs. Beam was born March 30, 1931 in Lincoln County to the late John M. Beam, Sr. and Camilla Dellinger Beam. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Elwyn L. Beam of the home, and a daughter, Loretta Beam of Vale; two brothers, Carl A. Beam and wife Glennie of Vale, and John M. Beam, Jr. and wife Joyce of Lincolnton; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Eddy Elwyn Beam, and a brother, George W. Beam.

Mrs. Beam was the bookkeeper and co-owner of Beam Lumber Company. She served as church organist at Cedar Grove Lutheran Church for over 60 years, where she was a lifelong member. She was active in the Women of the ELCA organization, Sunday School, and many other activities of the church.

Barbara was active in the Lincoln County Democratic party and women’s group. She enjoyed her walking companions, her flowers, her fish ponds, and her best dog-friend, “Inky”. She loved her family and friends, her church and choir family, and the symbolism of hope found in butterflies.

Mr. Carpenter was born February 10, 1936 in Lincoln County to the late John Edward Carpenter, Jr. and Lockie Lynch Carpenter. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hal and Gordon Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter worked as a carpenter and was a farmer. He served in the United States National Guard for nine years.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Carpenter Carpenter of the home; two sons, Franklin Sidney Carpenter, Jr. and wife Gail H. Carpenter of Lincolnton, and Eric Wilburn Carpenter and wife Renee Roberts Carpenter of Lake Wylie, SC; two daughters, Leanne Carpenter Cunningham and her late husband Clifford of Black Mountain, and Karen Carpenter Hough and husband Boyd of Salisbury; one brother, John Burke Carpenter and wife Iris of Bessemer City; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Prue Carpenter and Linda Carpenter.

Lawndale - Mr. Nathan Fitzhugh "Butch" Costner Jr., 73, of 3902 Harris Creek Road died Sunday, August 22, 2010 at his home.

Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late, Nathan Fitzhugh Costner Sr. and Hazel Heffner Costner. After serving in the US Army, Mr. Costner served in law enforcement for thirty years and retired from the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office.

Mr. Costner is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane Gantt Costner ; daughter and her husband, Lynn and Steve Vaughan of Lawndale; brother and his wife, Roger D. and Diane Costner of Shelby; sister and her husband, Nancy and Gary Harper of Archdale; several nieces and nephews and special companion, Brandi.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 pm Tuesday at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston.

The funeral service will be private.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, William Ray Ledford; daughter, Kathy White of Shelby; grandson, Chris White of Salisbury, grandson and caregiver Dorian White of Lawndale; great-granddaughter, Ali White; brother, Calvin Smart of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and sister, Bryte Palmer of Jacksonville, FL.

Mr. Jeune was born September 11, 1963 in Catskill, NY to Ethel Miller Jeune Diver and the late Charles Wilson. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Jeune, and his step-father, William Diver. Mr. Jeune worked in textiles. He was also a member of Revival Tabernacle Church in Lincolnton.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn Cafaro Jeune of the home; one son, Michael Jeune and wife Ashley of Lincolnton; one daughter, Hannah Rose Jeune of the home; three brothers, Randall Jeune of Lincolnton, Charles Jeune of North Carolina, and John Jeune of Lincolnton; two sisters, Margie Dixon of New York and Nancy Jeune of Ohio; and one grandson, Alex Jeune.

Sherrils Ford - Glenn Billingsley Horne, 78, of Sherrills Ford, NC passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Born June 2, 1932, in Peachland, NC, a son of the late Millard Wheeler and Minnie Billingsley Horne, he was an entrepreneur, adventurer and visionary who received a Bronze Star for bravery during the Korean War. Mr. Horne established Glenn Horne Electrical Contractors in 1968 and was a past president of the Master Electrical Contractors Association. He founded Valleydale School in 1970 and faithfully served his church, Denver Baptist, as a deacon, devoted member and volunteer.

Mr. Horne is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Carolyn Kiker Horne, daughters Sandy Broome and husband George of Charlotte, Kathie Morton of Charlotte, and Lisa Pendry and husband Dale of Denver, NC, granddaughter Leslie Broome Gompers and husband Steven, grandsons David Broome and wife Nichole, Joshua Morton and D.J. Pendry, and three great grandchildren, sisters Mattie Cole of Lockport, NY, Ellie Collins of Marshville, NC, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters-in-law.

A celebration of Mr. Horne’s life will be held Saturday, August 21 at 11:00 a.m. at Denver Baptist Church with graveside services to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 20 from 7 until 9 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Denver Baptist Church Building Fund, 6917 Forest Hills Drive, Denver, NC 28037 .

Mr. Horne’s family would like to express sincerest appreciation to Dr. McNabb and the CCU staff at Catawba Valley Regional Medical Center for the exceptional care and compassion they demonstrated during these last days.

His funeral service will be 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at Reepsville Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Hull officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mr. Carpenter was born January 19, 1942 in Catawba County to the late Butler Stevenson Carpenter, Sr. and Bertha Reep Carpenter. He worked as a truck driver.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Fox Carpenter of the home; two sons, Jeff Carpenter and wife Cindy of Vale, and Chad Carpenter and wife Brandy of Vale; two brothers, T.M. Carpenter and wife Pauline of Vale, and Farrell Carpenter and Mary Jo of Vale; three sisters, Emma Carpenter Metcalf and late husband Jim of Vale, Marie Canipe and husband Randy of Vale, and Ann Weldon and husband Jack of Hickory; and four grandchildren, Jessica Carney, Zach Carpenter, Chandler Carpenter, and Kaitlyn Carpenter; along with a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Jones was born January 6, 1937 in Lincoln County to the late Carl and Bessie Long Helms. She was also preceded in death by a son, Marshall Dean Gilbert. Mrs. Jones was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Jones of the home; one son, Steve Allen Gilbert of Lincolnton; one daughter, Cynthia Gilbert of Iron Station; one brother, Reese Helms of Lincolnton; two sisters, Hazel Lawing and Dorothy Lewis, both of Lincolnton; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Leatherman was born in Lincoln County on April 13, 1929 to the late Charlie Leatherman and Hattie Lee Miller Leatherman. He was a self-employed farmer.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one sister, Peggy Ramsey.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Jo Vanhorn Leatherman; son, Donald Leatherman of Oxford, FL; two daughters, Joann Leatherman and Robin Lingerfelt both of Vale; brother, Bobby Leatherman of Oxford, FL; sister, Christine Davis of Vale; seven grandchildren, Dustin Leatherman, Mitchell Lingerfelt, Megan Lingerfelt, Trenton Leatherman, Leighton Leatherman, Ashton Rose Leatherman, and Amber Gartland; and two great grandchildren, Bailey Leatherman and Caroline Lingerfelt.

LINCOLNTON - Mrs. Clara Mae Martin Eaddy, age 86 of the Brian Center, and formerly of 520 Louise Avenue in Lincolnton, died on Sunday, August 15, 2010.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 in the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Parish House following the service.

Mrs. Eaddy was born July 18, 1924 in Lincoln County to the late Zene E. and Mallie Taylor Martin. She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Olivia Ann Seagle.

She is survived by her husband, John Fred Eaddy of the home; two sons, Dr. Martin Eaddy of Lincolnton and John Fred Eaddy, III of Chapel Hill; one daughter, Mary Ann Eaddy of the home; five grandchildren, Jessica, Taylor, Kennan, Jenni, and Janna; and two great-grandchildren, Aamori and Deshawn.

Mrs. Towery was born in Cumberland County on May 25, 1918, to the late John Pinkney Glover and Cornelia Johnson Glover. She was a homemaker and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Casar.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a son Cecil Towery, four brothers, one sister and one grandchild.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years Cecil Raie Towery; son Hairl Towery of Lawndale; daughter, Lena McNeilly and husband James; five grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Mr. Pope is survived by his wife, Joyce Mace Pope of the home; four sons, Randy Pope and wife, Sallie of Crouse, Robby Pope of Cornelius, Tim Pope and wife, Debbie of Lincolnton and Todd Pope of Lincolnton; one sister, Lorene Brown of Lincolnton; six grandchildren, Josh Pope, Chelsea Pope, Ben Pope, Janson Pope, Daniel Pope and Chrystal Pope; two great-grandchildren, Aurora Wyatt and Keira Wyatt.
