As any scout can tell you, "Be Prepared" is an excellent motto. With the storms and other weather activity still fresh in people's minds, now is a good time for you and your family to prepare for the next disaster-whatever it may be.
There are three important steps to personal preparedness:
1. Get a kit. 2. Make a plan. 3. Be informed. |

Advice : Protecting YOUR World: Helpful Tips May Keep You Safe
|
| Posted by admin on 2010/4/21 12:49:21 (318 reads) |
By Kenny Helms
I am really excited to begin a regular news column covering both home and business security.
In this column, I want to give you a number of tips about how to best protect you, your loved ones and your possessions. A number of years ago when we were reviewing our company’s slogan, we came up with, “Protecting YOUR World”, which is exactly what we do at Helms Security.
When I was considering what to name the column, my daughter thought this would be a good title as well. So, with that in mind, I want to make that focus each week as well as highlight to you some of the latest innovations in security, fire protection and home automation.
Many times we are called after something major happens. A burglary, a fire, purchase of a new home, or even the birth of a child. All are great reasons to consider what kind of protection you will provide for your family and your possessions, but sadly, these are event driven and many times people fail to consider the consequences of not being proactive.

Advice : Speed Hits His Groove

NASCAR This Week By Monte Dutton
Four races into the 2010 Sprint Cup season, there are indications that Scott Speed has found a home in NASCAR.
A native of Manteca, Calif., the 27-year-old Speed has a varied background. In 2006-07, he competed in a total of 28 Formula One races, though he never managed a podium finish or earned any championship points. Since making the switch to stock-car racing, Speed has won four Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) events and one NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. His best Cup finish was a fifth at Talladega Superspeedway in April 2009.
This season? So far, so good. Speed occupies 12th place in the Cup point standings after a 10th-place finish at Atlanta.

Advice : Obama, Palin trade telling jibes over crib sheets

Who's scripted now? White House, Palin trade jibes over human crib notes and teleprompters
The jokes about Barack Obama's close relationship with his teleprompter have been constant since he became president.
Rush Limbaugh's poked fun at it on the radio. Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi bantered about it during an international summit. Obama himself skewered his affinity for the speaking crutch in an appearance before reporters.
But now, a year into Obama's administration, the subject has taken on more of an edge — and become a symbol of a larger debate over whether Obama has lost touch with the people. |

For most of us, the thought of ‘getting organized’ can be a bit overwhelming.
Where should I start? What needs to be done? What does being organized really mean anyway? In the face of an endless list of tasks, many of us end up paralyzed by organizational anxiety — overloaded before we even begin! But in reality, you don’t need to do it all, just the small percentage of things that really matter. |

Advice : Turkey Soup Makes a Wonderful Supper
|
| Posted by admin on 2009/11/10 11:00:00 (319 reads) |
By Angela Shelf Medearis
I produce and host an Internet cooking show called "The Kitchen Diva!" Sometimes, when you're in the middle of shooting, you have to improvise. After we finished one of the shows, I had a large amount of leftover turkey pieces, an abundance of acorn squash and several small containers of cooked vegetables. I didn't want anything to go to waste, so I decided to turn the turkey and vegetables into a soup and use the acorn squash as "bowls." No matter what leftover vegetables you use or how you decide to serve this soup, the results are spectacular.

Advice : Now Here's a Tip

By JoAnn Derson
■ "If you are making cookies with raisins, do yourself a favor and soak them in hot water for about 10 minutes prior to using. I had never done this before, and my sister-in-law suggested it. It makes such a difference. The raisins get plump and juicy." -- A Reader, via e-mail from Minnesota
■ "I'm always looking for ways to jazz up recipes for chicken, since we eat it so much. I like to bread chicken cutlets in different things, and a suggestion from a friend that I recently tried was delicious! To add flavor to chicken breading, use a tablespoon of a dry seasoning packet, such as one for making Italian or ranch dressing. They have a lot of flavor and really change the taste of fried chicken." -- R.L. in Tennessee

Advice : ACORN turns in Fla. workers on voter fraud charges
|

Armed with a tip from the grassroots group ACORN about its own workers, authorities on Wednesday began arresting 11 people suspected of falsifying hundreds of voter applications during a registration drive last year.
ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has long been accused by Republican and conservative activists — fed by talk-radio hosts — of fraudulently registering voters. But Miami-Dade prosecutors gave credit to the group for coming forward and ACORN officials said they felt vindicated. |

Advice : Breastfeeding could save 1.3 million child lives
|
| Posted by admin on 2009/7/31 8:52:33 (356 reads) |
GENEVA (Reuters) - Teaching new mothers how to breastfeed could save 1.3 million children's lives every year, but many women get no help and give up trying, the World Health Organization said on Friday.
Less than 40 percent of mothers worldwide breastfeed their infants exclusively in the first six months, as recommended by the WHO. Many abandon it because they don't know how to get their baby to latch on properly or suffer pain and discomfort.
"When it comes to doing it practically, they don't have the practical support," WHO expert Constanza Vallenas told a news briefing in Geneva, where the United Nations agency is based. |

Advice : Gas prices rise for 50th straight day
|
| Posted by admin on 2009/6/17 15:03:08 (380 reads) |
Retail gas prices climbed for the 50th straight day Wednesday, the longest streak in records dating to 1996, even as benchmark crude fell for the fourth day in a row.
Historically, filling station prices tend to rise during the summer as millions of vacationing Americans pour onto the highways. But a surge in crude prices during the past few months and less production from the refiners that make gasoline has added even more pressure on prices. |
