July is the month of cookouts, picnics, swimming, or fishing, but those with disabilities or illnesses are often unable to take part in the fun. This week, July 13-19, is National Therapeutic Recreation Week, highlighting the needs of those who may miss out on the leisure activities many of us take for granted. The week's theme is "Passion, Purpose, and Progress."
The National Therapeutic Recreation Society calls leisure and recreation "basic human rights—critical to health, happiness, and quality of life." Therapeutic recreation (TR) helps people with illnesses or disabilities enhance their health, functional abilities, independence, and quality of life through leisure activities. You may have seen TR professionals helping patients in hospitals, rehab centers, nursing facilities, adult care centers, and elsewhere. Much like comforting palliative care services, the TR plan is tailored to each person, with both short-term and long-term goals in mind. Progress toward each goal is documented and celebrated.
