LINCOLNTON - Lincoln County Sheriff’s officers have completed investigations on two more so-called hit lists in the Lincoln County Schools.

The first was reported on May 5, 2008 at Lincolnton Middle School on the Startown Road in Lincolnton. A teacher caught a student writing the hit list and contacted the Sheriff’s Office. Following a brief investigation by Sheriff’s deputies, it was determined the note was a copycat and did not pose a threat to the school and was done to disrupt classes. The student was suspended and the Lincoln County Schools will hold a disciplinary hearing.

The second note was discovered May 6, 2008 at North Lincoln Middle School when a 14-year-old student turned in a note she found in the restroom. The note communicated threats at the school. Following a brief investigation, it was determined the student was the person who wrote the note. The note was written to disrupt the school. She was suspended from school and will also be required to appear before a disciplinary hearing by the School System.

Both cases were turned over to Juvenile Authorities who will determine if the incidents will be handled within the school system or in the courts.

The first incident occurred at West Lincoln Middle School on April 30, 2008 when a so-called hit list was found in a classroom. Following a two-day investigation, detectives identified a 14-year-old student as the suspect in the case. Sheriff’s Detectives recommended the student be charged with 17 counts of communicating threats and one count of disruption of a public school. It will be up to the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to decide if the charges will be filed.
