HICKORY - What do the TV shows “The Simpsons” and “Futurama” have to do with mathematics? Surprisingly, quite a lot.
At least that’s the premise of a talk at Lenoir-Rhyne College, which will be presented by Dr. Sarah J. Greenwald on Friday, Feb. 29. The lecture will be held from 9:20 to 10:10 a.m. in the college’s P.E. Monroe Auditorium, located at 775 Sixth St. NE in Hickory.
Greenwald’s talk, titled “Good News Everyone! Mathematical Morsels from The Simpsons and Futurama,” is part of the college’s Steelman Lecture Series. It is free and open to the public.
Greenwald is associate professor of mathematics and a Women’s Studies core faculty member at Appalachian State University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Her scholarship areas include Riemannian geometry, popular culture and mathematics, and women and minorities in mathematics. She is the 2005 Mathematical Association of America Alder Award winner for distinguished teaching.
She co-created the educational Web site simpsonsmath.com with Andrew Nestler. Although not affiliated with the TV show, the site was mentioned in the audio commentary of the seventh season of “The Simpsons.” Her interactive mathematics lecture is listed on the DVD extras for the upcoming 20th Century Fox Futurama movie “Bender’s Big Score.” Greenwald has spoken about the effects of scientific popular culture representations on National Public Radio’s “Science Friday” and throughout the country.
According to the simpsonsmath.com Web site, “The Simpsons” and “Futurama” contain many humorous references to mathematics and science. In fact, Al Jean, executive producer and head writer for “The Simpsons,” has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Harvard University.
No special knowledge of math is needed to appreciate Greenwald’s talk. However, participants are encouraged to bring a calculator and pencil to the lecture.
