Local News : Doug Herbert's two sons lost in tragic automobile accident

LINCOLNTON - The two young sons of Top Fuel racer Doug Herbert were killed in an automobile accident Saturday morning in Lake Norman, N.C. Jon, 17, and James, 12, died instantly when their Mazda3 collided with a second vehicle in Cornelius around 10:10 am on Jetton Road.

Cornelius police said that the Herbert’s car was attempting to pass a third car when it went out of control and collided with a Hummer. The driver of the Hummer, who has not been identified, was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center.

A passenger in the third car was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.

Herbert, who was in Phoenix for preseason testing, is devastated and headed home to be with his family. Herbert’s Snap-on Tools Racing team is based in Lincolnton. Jon and James lived in Cornelius and attended Southlake Christian Academy in Huntersville.
