LINCOLNTON --
More than 50 residents from Lowesville to Vale packed the Lincolnton City Council chambers Monday night to visit with Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-10) in an interactive question-and-answer town hall.

McHenry opened the town hall with a recap of his visit to Lincoln County during the day, which included a visit to the Rotary Club of Lincolnton meeting; a grant check presentation in the amount of $53,000 to the North 321 Volunteer Fire Department; and a visit to licorice manufacturer Lucky Country in the Lincoln County Industrial Park.

“It was a pretty innovative place, Lucky Country,” said McHenry. “It’s an Australian company that located in Lincoln County because the county has a desire for business.”

U.S. Congressman Patrick McHenry (R-10) prepares to greet a standing-room-only crowd at a town hall meeting held at Lincolnton City Hall. McHenry's Monday visit to Lincoln County is part of nine day, 10 county, tour of the 10th district.

There was also a reception in McHenry’s honor at the Lincolnton/Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce prior to the town hall meeting.

McHenry told the standing room only crowd in attendance he always looks forward to coming home to the 10th District almost every weekend from Washington D.C.

“It’s great to go out and see people making things throughout Lincoln County,” said McHenry. “It’s also great to see people working.”

McHenry said that everyone throughout the 10th District needs to come together on one issue: education.

“It’s important that with the baby boomers retiring, that communities come together and support education to give future workers good paying jobs,” said McHenry.

One major topic of discussion among the crowd was that of national security. McHenry told of his recent trip to Israel with a congressional delegation to illustrate the point.

McHenry said it was important to understand that Israel is the only functioning democracy in the Middle East that is facing major security issues from radical Islam.

“It’s such a small country,” said McHenry, adding he could stand in any building in Tel-Aviv and see the coast on one side and mountains on another. “Biblical Israel should be the modern Israel today.”

McHenry said he realized that Israel and Palestinians have so many differences, a fact that came to light when McHenry was part of a delegation that met with Palestinian finance minister Salam Fayed.

“He told us one day he had no relationship with the terrorist group Hamas,” said McHenry. “The next day, I discovered the Palestinians transferred $2 million to Hamas.”

McHenry added that Israelis still believe that Fayed is “the best friend they’ve got.”

“While we were leaving Israel, one of my fellow colleagues was detained at the Israel airport,” said McHenry.

One man in the crowd questioned McHenry by saying “only one?”

“I like you,” McHenry chuckled. “That’s good.”

McHenry also took questions and opinions on issues regarding a myriad of topics including social security; illegal immigration and roads.

Audience member William Hal Schronce took McHenry to task on the amount of communications McHenry’s office sends out in the mail.

“This is a waste of my tax dollars,” said Schronce. “There are a lot of people who feel the way I do.”’

The audience vehemently disagreed with Schronce, with many of them telling McHenry they like getting mailings from the Congressman’s office. McHenry said it’s just one of the ways his office keeps in touch with his constituents.

“Besides the mailings and town hall meetings, we’ve also held virtual town hall meetings on the Internet,” said McHenry. “It’s important to stay in touch with my constituents.”

Several times during the night, McHenry drew applause for his stance on the hot-button issue of the war in Iraq.

Resident Judy Gilbert asked McHenry why he voted against a house bill that called for U.S. soldiers to spend equal time between combat and home. McHenry’s answer was swift, decisive and garnered a thunderous round of applause from the audience.

“We fight wars from where it happens,” said McHenry. “We made a commitment and have to be there. Many mistakes have been made as in every war. If we pull out of Iraq now, the Muslim world would become embolden to fight us closer to home.”

McHenry called the legislation poorly written.

“It’s not possible to put an arbitrary time frame on the war,” said McHenry. “It’s time that everyone pitches in for the effort.”

Congressman McHenry pointed to the high rate of re-enlistment among people who have already served in the Middle East. While McHenry didn’t have the figures available, he called the amount of people re-enlisting “a record.”

He added he’s against the resurgence of the draft in the United States.

“Our re-enlistment numbers are the key,” said McHenry. “Many of these people have been previously injured while fighting the war.”

McHenry’s visit to Lincoln County is part of the annual 10 county-nine day tour McHenry takes around the 10th district with several members of his staff.

McHenry is scheduled to be in Catawba County today (Tuesday) followed by Iredell County on Wednesday and Burke County on Thursday. The visits wrap up on Friday, when McHenry travels to Caldwell County.
