LINCOLNTON -- Based on preliminary Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results released by North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, 16 of 23 Lincoln County Schools have met 94.2% of its schools’ subgroup goals for 2006-2007.
“Certainly there are areas where we need to explore avenues for improvement, but overall, I am proud of this report,” said interim superintendent Dr. Elaine Jenkins. “This is the result of hard work of our students, teachers, administrators and staff.”
The North Carolina State Board of Education will release the final AYP results Sept. 6.
No Child Left Behind determines if a school makes AYP by measuring the proficiency levels of a number of subgroups present in each school and then measures the school and the system as a whole. A subgroup is defined as 40 or more students in the tested grades and each was tested in reading and math.
NCLB is a federal initiative, a national measure only of student proficiency. North Carolina’s ABCs Accountability goals (due for release in September) measure both student proficiency and growth. Missing one target means a school doesn’t make AYP.
Seven schools in Lincoln County did not meet AYP standards; Asbury School; Battleground Elementary; East Lincoln Middle; Kiser Intermediate; Lincolnton Middle; North Brook Elementary; and Pumpkin Center Middle.
