VALE -- Two West Lincoln High School FFA (Future Farmers of America) students were awarded the state FFA degree by the North Carolina FFA Association in June on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
Cameron Lutz and Jonathan Wesson were awarded during the ceremony that was held as part of the 79th North Carolina FFA state convention.
At Wednesday night’s Lincoln County Board of Education meeting, the two students were given certificates by the BOE and recognized for their achievement.

The Lincoln County Board of Education presented both students with plaques for their achievement.
According to WLHS teacher Greg Davis, the pair were part of only 209 students out of more than 17,000 FFA members in North Carolina to earn the high honor.
“One of the things they had to do was conduct a project outside of class,” Davis told the BOE. “They had to keep accurate records of income, expenses and hours worked.”
Davis explained that the students had to complete either 300 hours of unpaid time or productively earned and invested $1,000.
“Lutz worked on his family’s dairy farm,” said Davis. “Wesson, meantime, worked on his family’s beef cattle farm.”
The WLHS FFA chapter increased its membership by seven during the last school year and was also given recognition for the accomplishment.
In four of the last six years, the state FFA chapter has seen membership increases and is currently ranked eighth in FFA membership nationwide. Statewide, nine new clubs were chartered and experienced an increase of more than 800 student members.
“The heart of the organization is at the local level,” said state FFA coordinator Jason Davis. “FFA members and advisors continue to promote membership to agricultural education students so that all may experience the opportunities and benefits of being an FFA member.”
There are more than 495,000 FFA members nationwide ages 12 – 21 in more than 7,200 chapters in all 50 states. There are nearly 250 FFA chapters across the state including the WLHS chapter.
