Lincolnton, NC — Word that an Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) unit has been awarded to Lincolnton High School has arrived, and with Veteran’s Day just around the corner, the timing could not be better.
“It’s an honor to be selected as a site for this program,” says Superintendent Jim Watson. “It’s been a two-year process, but should be well worth it to the students of Lincolnton High School.” The process included documentation and two site visits.
Approximately only 14% of North Carolina high schools have AFJROTC units. Principal Tony Worley said, “The Air Force JROTC program is another great opportunity for the students at Lincolnton High School. This program will offer additional access to academic and leadership courses in our curriculum.”
AFJROTC does not mean its participants are military-bound. What AFJROTC offers is its “Citizenship Building” program, which, according to the AFJROTC, strives to bring students: • academic studies • character education • life skills education • leadership opportunities • team-building experiences • intramural competition • field trips / training opportunities.
Courses will be listed in the 2006-2007 course registration guide for students. The program will be staffed by two retired Air Force servicepersons; one commissioned and one non-commissioned. These positions will be funded jointly by the Air Force and Lincoln County.
The AFJROTC program will be housed in the former band room once the current construction project is complete.
