Huntersville The Town of Huntersville is holding a send-off event for donations collected by the Town and Huntersville schools and businesses to be delivered to the Gulf Coast to offer aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The event will begin Wednesday September 14th at Noon at a warehouse facility located at 13702 Statesville Road (NC21), across the street from Randy Marion GMC and beside FloorTech.

Huntersville-based trucking company DM Bowman, Inc. is donating a truck and driver to deliver collected items to Jackson, Mississippi. Collected items range from diapers, baby wipes, paper towels, toilet paper, canned goods, can openers, clothing, men and women’s under garments, bath robes for women and belts. Construction supplies such as nails, hammers, generators and other tools have also been collected during this effort. The truck is expected to depart around 1:30 p.m. that afternoon and Huntersville Police will be on hand to escort it to the Interstate.

Area organizations supported the Hurricane Katrina relief effort by accepting monetary donations and serving as a drop off location for goods by Huntersville residents. Participating organizations included Huntersville Town Hall, Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics, the Huntersville Police Department, Maintenance Supply, First Charter Bank and First Charter Insurance Group on Gilead Road, the Lake Norman YMCA, Curves for Women, Huntersville Methodist Church and DM Bowman, Inc.

Local schools such as Hopewell and North Mecklenburg High Schools and the Lake Norman Charter School also served as drop off locations and students and staff worked to raise money. As of Monday, these donations totaled more than $6,000 dollars. A local representative will be on hand to accept donations designated for the American Red Cross as well.

Volunteers will be at the warehouse on Tuesday after 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday at 10 a.m. getting the truck ready to leave for Jackson, MS at 1:30 p.m. Volunteers will also be on hand to accept donations of all kinds. Items that are still needed include suitcases and duffle bags.

For more information, contact Bobby Williams with the Town of Huntersville at (704) 875-6541 or volunteer Rob Dixon at (704) 875-2922.
