LINCOLNTON
– The Jeb F. Seagle Marine Corps League Detachment of Lincoln County is working with area businesses to make this year’s “Toys for Tots” campaign a success and to bring joy to boys and girls in our area this Christmas.

Toys for tots originates back to 1947, when Major Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The idea came from Hendrick’s wife, Diane.

In the fall of 1947, Diane crafted a homemade doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas.

When Hendricks determined that no agency existed, his wife told him that he should start one.

Such is the humble beginnings of this worthy project.

Local businesses such as Family Dollar, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Kim Duncan Martial Arts and many others have collection bins for donated toys for the children of Lincoln County.

So Far the MCL, with the help of Lincoln County Schools and local businesses, have collected over 1000 toys for the children of Lincoln County and will continue to accept donations till December 15th.

If anyone is interested in making a donation please contact Ann Reep at 704-735-4666 or anniefar@bellsouth.net
