LINCOLNTON - Guests were treated to a little bit of Lincoln County history Sunday afternoon on the early years (1841-1886) of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with tours of the church and its graveyard. The program included a special presentation by Lincolnton’s own Civil War Major General Stephen Dodson Ramseur (played by Dan Barefoot).

After General Ramseur assumed command of Jubal A Early’s division, he received a temporary promotion to major general on June 1, 1864, becoming the youngest West Point graduate to ever be promoted to major general in the Confederate Army.
He was later killed in action at the age of 27 and is buried in St. Luke’s graveyard next to his wife and daughter (who he never was able to see).
