STAFF REPORTS

LINCOLNTON - William (Willie) Heafner, president of Piedmont Companies, Inc. and owner of Carolina Shopping Center, announces some major changes coming to the shopping center, including the addition of several new tenants and a facelift for the building.

Carolina Shopping Center, located at 2671 E. Main Street in Lincolnton, will soon be home to a Family Dollar store, as well as a third location for The Drug Store, a locally owned business, and a new business named Lincolnton Business Center.

Founded in 1959, Family Dollar is a Charlotte-based company with more than 6,600 stores in 44 states. According to the company’s Website, most locations range in size from 7,500 to 9,500 square feet. However, the store set to open at Carolina Shopping Center in November will be significantly larger, at 12,000 square feet. The store will offer its usual mix of brand name and quality consumable merchandise, as well as fashion and seasonal merchandise, at everyday low prices. Family Dollar in downtown Lincolnton will continue to operate when the new store at Carolina Shopping Center opens.

Dave’s Construction Services of Eden, N.C., is handling construction for Family Dollar.

The Drug Store, scheduled to open in February 2010, will move into the space currently occupied by Piedmont Companies’ offices. The 6,000-square-foot facility will feature a drive-thru pharmacy, a first for the Boger City area of Lincolnton. The new location will offer prescriptions, toiletries, and over-the-counter medications, as well as The Drug Store’s home health care service.

Owner George Brookins says he looks forward to serving both new customers and existing customers who live in the area. He also says he felt it was important for The Drug Store to have a presence in the area with Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln’s new facility set to open next year.

“It’s going to be convenient for folks as the hospital campus grows,” Brookins says.

Howard Construction of Lincolnton is doing the upfit for The Drug Store.

Lincolnton Business Center, which will offer customers printing and copy services, Internet access, and other related services, is set to open soon in the space formerly occupied by PC Insurance Services, with Rodgers Builders of Charlotte handling construction.

In addition to bringing these new businesses to Carolina Shopping Center, Heafner says plans to refurbish the building are under way.

“We’re giving the exterior of the center an entire facelift,” Heafner says.

That includes a fresh coat of paint for the center, as well as seal coating and re-striping for the parking lot, which will feature approximately 30 more parking spaces. In addition, two standalone buildings located on the property – 2 Blondz Salon and the former home of Holt’s Family Restaurant – will be painted and fitted with new awnings.

Other changes in store for the center include a lateral move for the offices of Piedmont Companies and PC Insurance Services.

David E. Looper & Company of Hickory is constructing the new offices for Piedmont Companies and PC Insurance Services.

Opened in 1969, Carolina Shopping Center has been home to a number of businesses over the years, including original tenants Winn-Dixie, Ben Franklin, Sentry Drug, Twins’ Restaurant, White Tire & Auto, and Sewing Unlimited. Forty years later, Heafner believes the center has a bright future.

“The store names have changed over the years, yet the Carolina Shopping Center still thrives due to its dynamic location at the eastern gateway to the city,” Heafner says. “Tenants have been able to take advantage of growth and increased traffic flow in this area and will continue to do so with the new hospital opening a short distance away.”

Heafner also says more changes are on the horizon.

“Other new tenant announcements for Carolina Shopping Center are coming soon,” he says.
