Profile America : Fireplaces
|
| Posted by admin on 2008/12/4 7:31:40 (30 reads) |
Profile America — Thursday, December 4th. Many Americans are taking a break from shopping and the winter weather to relax in front of their fireplace. As with many of today’s luxuries, they were once necessities — for much of the nation’s history, nearly every home was heated by a fireplace, and all households had to cut and stack wood for cooking and to keep the house warm.
Today, just over half of new homes are being built with a fireplace, down from two-thirds in 1990. Across the nation, just over 250,000 houses are heated primarily with either an open fireplace or a wood burning stove insert. Many others use fireplaces as a supplemental source of heat. |

STAFF REPORTS
LINCOLNTON, N.C. - The Lincoln County Historical Association is implementing a new volunteer program for the archaeology department. Lincoln County is a rich and diverse area to study for past human occupation. This program will include activities such as lab night, fieldwork, and research opportunities. Archaeology involves a great deal of planning and patience, so there are many opportunities for public involvement.
The organization has several ongoing projects that are the focus for the current research. The first archaeology camps were held this past summer, and there is a need for volunteers to work on artifact processing for the Ramsour’s Mill Battlefield and Historic Woodside. In addition, upcoming projects include a Native American Mississippian site, and three other possible historic sites in eastern Lincoln County. The activities planned for the upcoming year are going to allow for field-walking exercises, digging and testing, recording techniques, artifact washing and identification training, and further extended research.

Profile America : First Coed College
|
| Posted by admin on 2008/12/3 8:08:42 (48 reads) |
Profile America — Wednesday, December 3rd. Colleges and universities with both male and female students are the norm today — but in 1833, only a few women went to college and the idea of coed classes was a social innovation. On this date that year, Oberlin College in Ohio opened its doors to both sexes. At the time, the school had 44 students — 29 men and 15 women. Now, Oberlin has a student body of close to 3,000, who enjoy one of the most comprehensive libraries of any college in the nation. For many decades, more males attended college than females.
Today, 57 percent of all students in higher education are women — nearly 10 million, compared with 7½ million men. |

Opinion : Another Year Goes By

By Kathryn Saine
I am sure everyone has heard the phrase “the older you get the faster time flies.” I have always heard this but usually just laugh it off. I thought “yeah I am still young I have plenty of time left to accomplish everything I want to!” But guess what; mom was right. These days seem to be flying by at an alarming rate that I wish I could put a lasso around them and rain them back and just slow things down a bit.
What made me think of something so profound a cold rainy day? My son. I was unpacking groceries and starting stacking up the diapers, wipes and children’s Tylenol to take up to Jackson’s room when it struck me like a Mack truck; Jackson is five months old today. Where did that time go? More shocking I don’t remember the time before we had him. It seams like he has been in our lives forever.
So this got me to thinking as the year 2008 comes to a close. What other events have occurred that seem as if they just happened yesterday but have now become part of history? Here are just a few examples:

Profile America : Cookie Cutters

Profile America — Monday, December 1st. The holiday season brings plates full of goodies — especially cookies. They come in all flavors and in all shapes — Christmas trees, Santa’s sleigh, and snowmen, to name a few. That’s why this is Cookie Cutter Week.
In kitchens all over the country, people will be digging in the back of utensil drawers and boxes on pantry shelves to find their Christmas cookie cutters, some of them passed down through the family for generations.
But today’s hectic lifestyle, with long working hours and long commutes, doesn’t leave the time for many to do their own baking. To fill the gap, there are nearly 7,500 good smelling retail bakeries across the U.S. — where baked goods are prepared on site, including many kinds of cookies in traditional holiday shapes. |

Panthers : Panthers Win in Green Bay

 Andrew Mason Panthers.com
GREEN BAY, Wis. - The snow that fell upon Lambeau Field in the fourth quarter Sunday afternoon was neither elegant nor picturesque. It was icy. It was painful, thwacking into the faces of all who turned in its path, accompanied by a wind that had been gusting capriciously from what seemed like all directions throughout this pivotal game.
And when the Panthers had to buckle down and seize the game, the wind and snow were at their backs.
Yes, this was the weather that one associates with the Green Bay Packers - the conditions that once inspired a commercial for a cough-and-flu remedy that ran on NFL broadcasts for several years, saluting the Packers and their fans' ability to remain resilient in the harshest of conditions. |
